Be of good cheer

John 16:29-33
His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure! Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Homily:

The free relationship between Jesus and his disciples is seen in the first quote – “Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure! Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God.”

In that statement, they expressed previous doubt and a new commitment.

The feedback that followed from Jesus was the unsweetened truth. The road ahead was not a wide straight path, but a narrow winding one. But the path is not the purpose of the journey, the end is.

Be of good cheer.

As individuals we need to also build our unique relationship with God. Not based on the prescriptions of others, but on the insights you gain as you walk with him. It is okay to doubt, be confused, deny and even run away. All these serve as part of your journey with Him. He does not come to you with a prescription of how you must walk with him. You will understand how to walk, as you walk with Him. Your journey with Him will slowly move from a puzzle to a key, unlocking love, peace and joy.
