Giving

The expectation of gratitude is a set-up for despair.

Whatever you do for others, the only gratitude you can control is the gratitude that you are able to give. The expectation that those you give to will be grateful will only lead to misery.

This is not an excuse for the ungrateful, but a soothing balm for the givers. I have seen too many people who go out of their way to share, yet end up depressed, because of their expectation of at least some gratitude. Most times, what you actually get for giving is indifference, resentment, suspicion or entitlement.

The real satisfaction in giving is in giving, not in the gratitude of the receiver. Getting any gratitude is a bonus, a rare bonus, one to be treasured, but not to be sought.

Learn to give without an expectation of reciprocation. It will free you from any burden associated with giving.

One of the ways to learn this is by giving anonymously. A faceless hand that gives.
