We cannot treat others any better than we know to treat ourselves. Like the foam of an ocean, it just will not last, in spite of the depth of the ocean.
Sooner than later, what we are used to accepting from ourselves, we give to others.
Giving on to others more than you give to yourself is draining and unsustainable. Taking more from others than we give of ourselves is overwhelming and leads to a mess.
There is a balance required, but it starts with truly learning to love self.
