Independent choices, shared consequences

This is a way to describe relationships.

This is why my Father always used to say, “Act as you please, but do not forget that your surname speaks for more than just you”.

When you hear a name, one of two things happen – it means nothing to you or you associate it to a story.

If the name means nothing to you, immediately you hear the name, you start building a story around it.

If you associate it to a story, confirmation bias takes over, and you expect the individual to play out the story.

A person whose parent’s name is well known, is expected to live with the consequences of the name – good or bad.

A person whose school’s name is well known, is expected to live with the consequences of the name – good or bad.

A person whose partner’s name is well known, is expected to live with the consequences of the name – good or bad.

Luckily, we can all build a name for ourselves, no matter the story that existed or did not exist before.

Responsibility is the process of being deliberate about your choices, with an understanding that the associated crosses will be carried by many who have no choice.
