Family Power Dynamics

My much younger cousin wants a phone and told his dad to ask me, because I owe him a gift.

I smiled and asked my uncle if he approves of him getting a phone, considering he’s in junior high school.

He said he approves.

I asked him to send me the cost of the phone required and account details for payment.

A few minutes later, my aunt reaches out to me saying she does not approve of a phone.

I smiled and replied that I fully understand.

Knowing my aunt, I was sure my uncle was a lone wolf on this path.

I can only imagine the dressing down my uncle has experienced for this gaffe.

It’s been days now and no word on the phone request.

For the uninitiated, this will be surprising. For the initiated, it isn’t.

Even if my uncle reached out to proceed with the purchase, I wouldn’t.

Why? My uncle will forgive me for not following through, but my aunt will never forgive me for following through.

It is never wise to offend the unforgiving.
