Matthew 5:27-32
“You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.’
But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
“It was also said, `Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’
But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Homily:
“Reject every kind of evil” – 1 Thessalonians 5:22
For me, I just use “Flee from all appearance of evil”. Do not try to wrestle with sin. More have failed than have succeeded. Why take your chances with everlasting life? Just flee.
What you exclude from your view, ultimately leaves your thoughts. On our journey with God, there are many side attractions and side distractions. Any moment spent considering them is a setback. Flee.
Whatever you know is sinful (no excuses, you know what is sinful), please runaway from it. If you doubt whether it is sinful or not, ask yourself, “If this was your final moment before death, will you make this choice?”
I like the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife in Genesis 39, and I particularly pay attention to this verse –
“She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.” – Genesis 39:12
Run, do not even walk, Run. Flee from all appearance of evil.
