Adaptability

I came across a flip chart today, that reminded me about something from physics.

Elasticity = Stress/Strain

Where,

  • Elasticity is the ability of a material to resume its normal shape after being stretched or compressed.
  • Stress is “force per unit area”.
  • Strain is “deformation of a solid due to stress”.

In humans, elasticity is basically adaptability. It has made me understand, that it is not higher stress that makes us snap, but higher strain.

Which is why keeping our body and mind fit, is crucial in a high intensity environment.

If strain remains constant, even with an increase in stress, adaptability actually improves.

If stress remains constant, any increase in strain will reduce adaptability.

Zero stress leads to zero adaptability.

Zero stress will kill you.

Zero strain leads to undefined adaptability.

Zero strain is unpredictable.

I am still exploring the stress-strain curve and I will one day share my thoughts on this exciting phenomenon.
