“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:44-45
I tried this recently. I thought of each person that I hold a grudge against, for perceived harm intended against me. I prayed for each of them.
Sincerely, it was not easy. The feelings of hurt and betrayal came back. I started negotiating in my head how far I should ask for blessings on them.
Head: “Dear Lord keep them safe and let them prosper. *Thoughts*.
Heart: Okay Lord, leave the prosper part alone. *Feelings*.
Head: What is wrong with me? Why shouldn’t they prosper? Is this prayer not for them? *Thoughts*
Heart: Okay Lord, let them prosper, small. *Smiles*.
Head: Okay, you either go all in with this prayer or end it. *Straight face*.
Heart: Okay Lord, let them prosper and help me to truly forgive them.
I felt truly good after praying for those I perceive as persecutors.
I had always known the advice from Jesus. I have read testimonies of how liberating it was to apply it. But I have never tried it before. An example of knowledge without action being worthless.
This will now form a part of my system. Whenever anyone causes me great discomfort, I will pray for them. I have seen that as the prayer goes to God, it liberates me.
Try it.
