Cue 69 – Solitude and Leadership

Solitude and Leadership

“Why is it so often that the best people are stuck in the middle and the people who are running things—the leaders—are the mediocrities? Because excellence isn’t usually what gets you up the greasy pole. What gets you up is a talent for maneuvering. Kissing up to the people above you, kicking down to the people below you. Pleasing your teachers, pleasing your superiors, picking a powerful mentor and riding his coattails until it’s time to stab him in the back. Jumping through hoops. Getting along by going along. Being whatever other people want you to be, so that it finally comes to seem that, like the manager of the Central Station, you have nothing inside you at all. Not taking stupid risks like trying to change how things are done or question why they’re done. Just keeping the routine going.

I tell you this to forewarn you, because I promise you that you will meet these people and you will find yourself in environments where what is rewarded above all is conformity. I tell you so you can decide to be a different kind of leader.” – William Deresiewicz

Tone

There are people you need to call and you automatically put a tone of excitement into your voice. No matter how shitty your day is, you want to offer the best part of you to them always. Because they bring you joy.

There are people you need to call and you automatically put a tone of anger into your voice. No matter how great your day is, you want to offer the worst part of you to them always. Because they bring you pain.

There are people you need to call and you do not need to reset your tone. However you feel is how you project your voice. These people are in the majority and can ultimately swing to people that bring you joy or people that bring you pain, depending on the prevalent tone they get from you.

You unwittingly dictate who brings you joy and who brings you pain. You even dictate whether you need to pick the call.

Consciously bring a tone of excitement to every call and see how your relationships change.

Our God

Psalms 16:1-2, 5, 7-11
Preserve me, O God, for in thee I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “Thou art my Lord; I have no good apart from thee.” The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; thou holdest my lot. I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also dwells secure. For thou dost not give me up to Sheol, or let thy godly one see the Pit. Thou dost show me the path of life; in thy presence there is fulness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Homily:

God is ever present. Humans are not ever conscious.
God is always here. Humans are not always conscious of his presence.
God prods us in the direction of good. Humans ignore the good and complain about the prod.
God is patient with our journey. Humans unwittingly accelerate to the end.

The challenge of the human condition is one of consciousness, not options.

Be still for a moment and see. All you struggle with, is because you resist the guidance of your Father.
