NYSC

Today, I had a good laugh at all the jokes surrounding National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members being reminded that they are military reserves for war time.

Just as I was thanking my stars that my NYSC days were behind me, I learnt I could also be called back out of retirement to serve.

Jokes apart, the NYSC Director General made some good points in his full-length interview.

I served in Katsina State. My first full time job was in Katsina. I made some good friends there who have stayed true till this day. It was really a melting point of diversity and inclusion.

I am thankful for the beautiful stories I carry from my NYSC days.

Sages

When you first start exercising, you focus on speed and numbers. How fast you can go and how you can rack up the numbers. Externally focused.

As you progress in understanding, you slow down, realising that a measured pace and form are more important. How slow you can go without losing balance and the right body shape to avoid long-term injury. Internally focused.

The same applies in many aspects of life. The beginner is hurried and focussed on lifting numbers. The sage is unhurried and focussed on sustainable shape.

They both go far, but one goes farther.

All start as beginners, few become sages. Because slowing down, however fulfilling, is boring.
