Pearls of wisdom

Today, I read a very interesting quote by Milwaukee Buck’s star Giannis Antetokounmpo –

“When you focus on the past, that’s your ego: ‘I did this. We were able to beat this team 4-0. I did this in the past. I won that in the past.’

When I focus on the future, it’s my pride: ‘Yeah, next game, Game 5, I do this and this and this. I’m going to dominate.’ That’s your pride talking. It doesn’t happen. You’re right here.

I kind of try to focus on the moment, in the present. That’s humility. That’s being humble. That’s not setting no expectation. That’s going out there, enjoying the game, competing at a high level. I think I’ve had people throughout my life that helped me with that. But that is a skill that I’ve tried to, like, kind of — how do you say it, perfect it, master it. And it’s been working so far. So I’m not going to stop.”

Simple, yet profound and relatable.

It is interesting how we only stop to listen to people when they win. This wisdom always existed with Giannis.

There is so much to learn from those around you, even when they are not winning.

I am thankful for pearls of wisdom offered without a price.

Feels like

Meteorologists always reported ambient air temperature, but people started complaining about the mismatch between the reported temperature and what it actually feels like.

You hear people say, “the temperature is 10 oC, but it feels like 6 oC.” It turns out they were right, and scientists had to figure out how to measure a “feels like” temperature.

A “feels like” temperature therefore, combines ambient air temperature, wind speeds and relative humidity to determine how the prevailing conditions feel on bare skin. It is a more accurate description of the human experience.

I find it interesting because it applies to just about every aspect of the human experience.

What is routinely reported as the state of things is not necessarily what it feels like.
