In the story of the Tower of Babel, one verse always comes to mind –
The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”- Genesis 11: 6 – 7 (NIV)
In there, lies the power of enduring relationships (and Organisations).
In there, lies the root cause of failing and failed relationships.
A united team with one speak is simply unstoppable. Any task at hand will bow to their collective genius. Nothing will be impossible and interestingly, they will know and believe this implicitly.
This is why top-down or bottom-up alignment in Organisations is a top priority for CEOs. Everyone seems to agree with whatever direction the boss leads, but until there is one speak within the organisation, execution will reveal conflicting commitments.
The seed of discord is always planted from without, but it takes root within, grows and becomes too complicated for a continued unification. This phenomenon is sometimes labeled silo mentality, but it is really a lack of one speak.
This is why in change management journeys, communication for buy-in remains the fulcrum.
