A RACI matrix is a tool for clear assignment of responsibilities.
It is an acronym that stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed.
For simplicity, each role can be described as:
Responsible (hands) – executioner.
Accountable (eyes) – owner.
Consulted (mouth) – consigliere.
Informed (ears) – investor.
Decision making resides with those Responsible and Accountable.
Goal Alignment resides with those Consulted and Informed.
2 common problems organisations face are:
1. Those that are supposed to be consulted or informed, takeover decision making. They have little or no skin in the game, yet they think they know all risks and can take all risks. They are the mouth and ears. They talk a good game and feed the gossip mill with their ears.
2. Those that are responsible and accountable, reject goal alignment. They think it slows them down. They think they can deal with anything thrown at them, but they are the hands and eyes, they are limited to only see what is at hand.
Therein, lies the big dichotomy in organisational structure – Centralization or Decentralization.
A RACI matrix, well applied, positively accelerates execution.
