Gray rhinos

You know what’s coming, you see what’s coming, you talk about it, you wish it away. Uou do not pay attention, you do not explore it, you do not act, you do nothing.

Gray rhinos are more common than black swans and easier to talk about than elephants in the room.

Most individuals, institutions and countries are not blind to their situation, they’re just unwilling to act, hoping that doing nothing will bring nothing. But a gray rhino charging at you requires only one thing – deliberate action.

Interestingly, a single event can simultaneously be a gray rhino, an elephant in the room and a black swan to different groups.

For an individual, a single event can be a gray rhino to the individual, an elephant in the room to their friends, and a black swan to their partners.

Within an institution, a single event can be a gray rhino to the Frontline Employees, an elephant in the room to Middle Managers and a black swan to Senior Executives.

Within a country, a single event can be a gray rhino to the Upper class, an elephant in the room to the Middle class and a black swan to the Lower class.

What is your current gray rhino?

When will you deliberately act on it?

Trust and Obey

John 15:9-11
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Homily:

Today, I recall the hymn by John H. Sammis – Trust and Obey

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
