Divide and Choose

One cuts, another chooses.

This has been a cake division protocol applied to children for some time. Where 2 kids are always at each other’s throats about who gets the larger piece, there is wisdom in applying the “divide and choose” protocol.

Usually, the big fights are because the kid that cuts the cake, also chooses first.

In divide and choose, one child is allowed to divide the cake in any way she feels is fair, and the other is allowed to choose first, any part that he feels is fair.

Knowing that she will only be taking what is left, the cutter is incentivized to divide the cake in 2 equal parts.
Knowing that he will be making the first choice, the chooser is incentivized not to complain of the part he gets.

It is one of the simplest and efficient ways to distribute resources.

It can be applied in many other areas of life and is a variant of skin in the game.

Those with authority should be the most affected by their decision making.
Those with responsibility should feel that their choices influence decision making.

Authority without responsibility is tyranny.
Responsibility without authority is slavery.
