At a point in life we realize that not everyone is going to be on our journey with us till the end.
We need to strike a right balance between “draining” relationships and “filling” relationships.
Pruning is a critical step in nurturing.
Cutting off the draining relationships is just as important as sustaining the filling relationships in our lives.
It is impossible to live with just filling relationships, otherwise, you get over-filled, explode and create a mess.
It is also impossible to live with just draining relationships, otherwise, you get sucked in, implode and create a caricature.
We need both relationships to ensure a continual renewal of our being and growth.
How do you distinguish draining from filling relationships?
Track your energy levels before and after engagement with the individual or team.
Make an inventory of those that trigger a dip in your energy levels and those that trigger a lift in your energy levels.
Do it over a period of 90 days, because spot checks can be misleading.
And then either ruthlessly plug the drains or actively upgrade the taps.
We do not need more than 1 draining relationship for every 4 filling relationships.
