Our Lady of Sorrows (Memorial)

Luke 2:33-35
And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.”

Homily:

After I read the autobiography of any great person, I look for the story of those that they loved deeply and those that loved them deeply.

I look for those that a sword pierced through their own soul, as they lived through the accompanying high peaks and deep valleys of greatness.

It is easy to think everything is blissful for those that are closest to greatness, but the truth is far from it. It is tortuous. The only thing that keeps greatness going is the peak-end rule. It helps people to still remember it fondly.

Be careful what you wish for.
