You do not choose the water you fetch from the river. The one that you fetch is the one that comes to you. You just have to hope no one has polluted it upstream and make sure you do not pollute it for those downstream.
Whether you fetch or not, the river keeps going. It does not really need you, yet it gives of itself to you, because you need it.
Though you hold a part of the river, you neither hold the river nor its source.
Pay reverence to the water you fetch, and optimise its use. Any waste is irretrievable.
The river is “life” and the water you fetch is “today”.
