Luke 12:54-57
He also said to the multitudes, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, `A shower is coming’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
Homily:
For most, it is not a lack of knowledge on what is right or wrong, it is a matter of ease and pleasure for the moment.
I always use the simple example of lactose intolerant people. They know the uncomfortable effects dairy has on them, yet I have not met a lactose intolerant person that does not over-indulge in it. The discomfort that will follow does not dissuade them from present ease and pleasure. I am one of them.
How then do we not just judge what is right, but actually follow through and act right?
Acceptance – embrace who you really are, not who you wish you are.
Accountability – Get a trigger that makes the consequences of your decision making more visible.
Avoidance – Flee from what you can.
