Hard as you try, you cannot have a full picture of your journey without feedback from your environment.
Relativity contributes greatly to this. A girl sitting in an air-conditioned bus moving at 100 km per hour, throws a ball up and catches it in her hand. To her the ball has only moved up and down in the bus, but to the standing onlooker it has also moved forward at 100 km per hour.
We are perfectly designed to notice ups and downs, but we need feedback from our environment to promptly notice movement forward or backward.
You can only act on what you notice.
