Rules and Patterns

There are no rules to living.

There are patterns to living. But even patterns do not predict the future, it only tries to draw a line of best fit from the past to the present.

The future is fundamentally unpredictable. The moment you are cocksure about what comes next, is only a moment of hubris.

You can build on rules, hoping it offers minimal suffering in the future, and you might get lucky.
You can build on patterns, hoping they carry on into the future, and you might get lucky.
You can build on nothing, hoping it holds no drag on the future, and you might get lucky.

Rules are patterns we try to dictate to the future. The future consciously undermines dictators.

It is good to understand patterns, it is worthless to turn them into rules.
