It is easy to say “walk away” when you look in from the outside.
It is hard to walk away when you are on the inside.
Humans are addicted to one kind of abuse or the other. Some are accepted by society, others are frowned upon.
Withdrawal is tough because of the seeming availability of abuse, and scarcity of options. Which is why sources of abuse also actively limit alternatives.
Continually saying “walk away” or “leave to save your life” does not help, because anyone that sees no alternatives already stares at death.
We need more visible institutions that support with alternative paths.
