Days and Years

Today, I got a farewell email from a friend.

One line from his message stood out for me – “…the plan was 5 years and then move on to other things, but then, life happened and the years sped past.”

I smiled.

Gretchen Rubin had unmatched insight when she said – “The days are long, but the years are short.”

He is one of the lucky few that still gets to choose possibility, in spite of the sunk cost of years gone by.

I am thankful for the days that define years, and the years that refine days.

On Grief

Grief stretches time. It makes sure you dwell for longer within it.

Feeling like space is closing in, you look for an escape.

Death looks like an opening. But an opening to what?

“Why do you think death is any better when you’ve never been dead before?”

The devil you know is better than the one you don’t.

The life you know is better than the one you don’t.

Grief is personal, but it is not uniquely personal.

You might feel lonely in your experience of it, but you are not alone. Shame is what blurs our vision, ensuring we do not see that we are all grieving in one way or another.

Whatever happens, be here tomorrow.

Tomorrow, you will find that your story was a wave. It slammed hard on the beach, but there are many other waves, slamming even harder. No matter how big your wave, there were many more before and many more will come after. Yours will scarcely be remembered, hard as it hits.

Smile. Be here tomorrow.
