Today, I reflected on resignation letters. I saw one today.

They are some of the most courteous letters you will ever read, with lots of paragraphs saying nothing more than the subject.

The truth of why people are leaving cannot be found there, not even exit or stay interviews can help you glean the truth.

To know the truth about why people leave, listen to the jokes, join standing meetings that occur away from the walkways, ask the leavers after they have left (off the record).

When Hiram Johnson said, “The first casualty when war comes is truth”, he might not have seen how this applies to areas beyond war. Or maybe he did. Maybe our entire existence is one of movement from one type of war to another, making the truth a perpetual casualty.

Resignation letters are symbols of a cold war.

I am thankful for insights from everyday experiences.
