Prisms

Today, I had a long drive around town with a willing storyteller.

There is no way to check if all the stories I heard are true, but they helped make a 4-hour drive feel like a 30-minutes stroll.

There is beauty in every place, but insecurity and incompetence are veils which conceal much of Nigeria’s beauty.

I am thankful for prisms that help me see gold in the mud.

The wind’s current

Laziness is not the cause of poverty.

It is easy to fall into the trap of believing something is fundamentally wrong with the poor, when your ship has only been moving in a desirable direction.

For most people, it was not the ship they built that ensured they are where they are, it is the wind’s current.

The wind can by chance move you just as swiftly in a desirable direction, as it can in an undesirable direction. The wind does not really care about you.

Few can sustainably row against the wind.

The poor work hard against the direction of the wind’s currents, but hardly ever make it in the opposite direction. Usually their keel breaks, and what you see are people drowning, even when the wind changes direction.
