Today, I rounded up the sorting of all the files in a postgraduate program that I am running.
It was hard work, harder than I had anticipated. It took me four days when I thought it would require a day.
This is something that should not have even felt like work if I had been doing it in bite-sized pieces as it was due.
The trick our mind plays is to set out a block of time in the future to do all we can do in smaller sizes now. It is a self-limiting trick that ultimately leads us to achieve nothing.
The only reason I was able to complete the task is that I took a short leave, which meant fewer conflicting commitments. Yet it still felt grueling.
Lesson learned: Break all long-term goals into daily bite-sized pieces. Do what is necessary now. Do not set out a time in the future that you have no control over. However little can be done now will always be a significant saving compared to doing it at any other time.
