The 3 Ds

The 3 Ds of wisdom: Discipline, Discernment, and Discretion.

Discipline comes from the Latin “disciplina,” which derives from “discipulus” (student/pupil). The root is “discere,” meaning “to learn.”

It is about being a disciple to life.

It is the beginning of wisdom.

Discernment comes from the Latin “discernere,” meaning “to separate” or “to distinguish between.” The root breaks down to “dis-” (apart) + “cernere” (to sift or separate).

It is about clarity of perception and judgment.

It is the purpose of wisdom.

Discretion also comes from Latin “discretio,” from “discernere” – the same root as discernment. It literally means “separation” or “distinction.”

It is prudence shaped by thoughtful consideration.

It is the proof of wisdom.
