Disappointment or Regret

Always sitting within every choice are two crosses: disappointment or regret.

Disappointment is a failure of competence. How you thought reality would play out turned out otherwise. A lot of what happens in reality is more outside your control than you realized, but you bet on what you know and came up short. It is external, and you can learn from it to improve your bet on expectations.

Regret is a failure of character. What you thought you could get away with comes back to bite you in the place that the sun don’t shine. The consequences were laid before you beforehand, but you bet on the odd chance that your case is different but found out that life gets even. You have to live with it and recenter to virtues that stand the test of time.

In decision-making, optimize for disappointment and avoid regret.

Disappointment strengthens our core, but regret crushes it.
