Discernment

Settle down is good advice.

Don’t settle is also good advice.

Discernment helps you harness the value in both.

A friend called to express concern about his delay in getting married. I explained to him that settling down is an important marker of growth as long as it is not out of desperation, because marriage is the one decision where you don’t settle.

Settling down must never be a race against time; otherwise, you will settle, and the regret that will compound from that decision will stunt your growth at best or break you at its worst.

For the most important decisions in life, time must be your ally.
