1 John 5:14-15
And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him.
Homily:
There is a confidence in a daughter that has the ears of her father. It is difficult to explain, but all men come to respect her. Including her mother.
There is a confidence in an employee that has the ears of her boss. It will serve you well to respect her.
There is a confidence in a human that has the ears of God. Humanity goes to them.
Interestingly, we all have the ears of those with significant influence in our lives. The difference is that while some get a default “yes” to their requests, others get a default “no”.
Those that get a default “yes”, have a recurring pattern of obedience, gratitude, care and courage.
Those that get a default “no”, have a recurring pattern of disobedience, entitlement, complaint and irresponsibility.
What you find is that those who get a default “yes” from God, started by saying a default “yes” to God.
And those who get a default “no” from God, started by saying a default “no” to God.
The same applies in all relationships.
