Mentors

The odds of you being a billionaire are better than the odds of you being born. Yet you are here reading this.

A lot of what is probable is treated as impossible, because we are poor at probabilities.

Look at where you are. Here right now. There is at least one impossible task of the past that you have achieved. A task that used to trigger anxiety but is now a memory that puts an upside down rainbow on your lips.

In organisations, “impossible ” goals are called “stretch” goals. Guess what? People crush them every year. But when most of those same people are asked to define goals for themselves, they run behind the shield of achievable or realistic. They grossly understate their goals and sadly, they don’t even crush it.

It seems we are better at driving for higher goals under the rule of hierarchy. Without this in our personal lives, we lose direction like a plant without sunlight. This is why people hack it with mentors in their personal lives. We seem designed to require an accountability partner. Someone you respect enough to want to show up as your best self, yet is kind enough to gently nudge you back up when you fall.
