There are very few “nevers” that help in life, but one I have consistently found to be true is this – “Never dismiss anyone who mentions that they have a suicidal feeling, especially when they try to sandwich it in a joke, laughter or passing comment.”
Get them help. Read about how to help. Replace the demons in them with love. Care. Make them know how much they mean to you and the world. Get professional help and make them commit to using it.
I have seen one too many suicides by otherwise role models.
The one that happened last Friday with the MD of a fast growing NGO hit me hard. He left behind a wife and 2 daughters. His suicide has left them feeling inadequate. Like they were not enough to make him stay. The look of sorrow in their eyes is agonising. Friends are in shock. The feeling of “if only I had done more.”
Never dismiss anyone who in any way indicates that they are flirting with suicide. Please for humanity’s sake, help. Get good professional help. And make sure they commit to it.
