The benefit of the doubt is an extension of grace.
It is given to one who has otherwise shown themselves trustworthy or one who has not shown themselves untrustworthy.
Which is why such grace is rarely extended to self. We think we know ourselves so well and find ourselves untrustworthy. Every action we therefore take is seen by ourselves as willed by ourselves. But nothing is more untrue.
Many of our choices and crosses are shaped before we even developed agency for shaping. And so what we see as untrustworthy is the truth of humanity intimately shared through self.
The extension of grace should not be only to the trustworthy but also to the steady. The one who stays come what may: family, friends, self.
No one deserves more grace than those we know well.
Give them the benefit of the doubt.
